Hidalgo County is the southernmost county of the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the population was 5,932. The county seat of Lordsburg.
History
Hidalgo was created on February 25, 1919. According to the 2001/2 New Mexico Blue Book, it was named for the town north of Mexico City where the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. Other sources cite Miguel Hidalgo as the county's namesake.
